Here it is the Beantown Boneheads hit up the 24hrs at Vail Lake! I was up for the start I prep'd by staying cool if I could as temps were in the mid 90's by 11am, spun on the trainer for ~15mins. Got to the line and jogged the lemans start trying to keep the HR down and not get to my bike last. Hit the course and while I tried not to I went out pretty hard. Me on the start I road thru the sand pit, hit the fire road and proceeded to pass a bunch of people who obviously went out too hard on the run. Into the main climb, there was a bit of traffic that tossed me off a few lines, but not too bad. I passed a few peeps and got passed by a few. Once at the top I Rocked the decent passing people left and right and thats when I realized that the main climb was only one of many. The course was full of short steep climbs, I hit more traffic on those short steep climbs as people would make it up 80% and didn't have the juice to get up the whole thing, I rocked the descents and only dabbed 2-3 times on the whole lap! Heat was BAD! "What did they do bury fuckin heaters under the dirt! the sand feels like it on fire" some british guy riding with me. The legs felt great, the lungs a bit irritated from the hot dry air, the stomach was a mess.... the heat really put the hurt on my stomach by mile 8 I was getting vomitious and dialed it back to stop the digestional pyrotechnics. I finished up strong and jumped right into the pool chami and all which was 70F and shocked the crap out of me! but got my body temp down. I then drank ~2 liters of gatorade, 2 potatoes, and ~1/2 a lb of pasta. Activity

After the break I was nervous and anxious. This was my lap! I did the first lap in the heat for the chance to get one more day lap in and kill it. My HR was high due to the adrenaline! Chris came in and I was OFF, sprinted out of the gate, thru the sandtrap and onto the fire rode. I hit the fire road hard! cranking!, I hit the climb and pushed it! I hammered 100% I kept saying in my head leave nothing on the trail! all out! well I didn't go ALL out as I knew that it was a 10 mile course but tried to keep my HR under 185 when I could on the climb. The heat was backing off the sun was setting and while I had my bar mount light on due to the rules (all laps started 1 hr before sunset have lights) I didn't want to use them. I got to the top of the climb in around 25 mins. On the next decent I white knuckled it putting all four fingers on the grips no brakes! I passed 3 or 4 people here. Hit the next short climb and hammered, the next super steep short approach I hammered and cleared it (HR must have been in the mid 190's at that point) I rocked the decent clearing all the switchbacks and rocking the fire road transitions. Next came the smooth graded road short climb, I dropped it into the grany gear but kept the speed up and rounded the turn at the top with authority. again on the decent no breaks! till I hit the single track then it was a mix of late braking, manualling the whoops, sprinting out of the corners and boarder line out of control riding. Hit the bottom of the main decent and tried to keep the speed up as I climbed up the "ambulance road" into the tunnels of love and I tore thru there, ripping the turns catching air over the little climbs as I was holding my momentum thru out. got to the fire road and started heading back up the small climb to the insanely steep short climb up to the ridge and got off and RAN it! jumped back on my saddle (ouch that kinda hurt!) and grind away hit the Whoops (steep up hills followed by steep drops) was going so fast I aired out the tops on each one tossing in a lill whip and turn down (style was key but rather stupid looking back as I was pretty out of control and could have lost it at any time) Now was the mile 8 sand section! I was getting burnt, I was starting to feel a bit sick and the heat was still getting to me, I didn't want my HR to spike heading thru the sand so I jumped off and ran which was a good thing as I looked at my HR getting back on the bike and it was only 175ish if I road it I'd be in the 190's. Up the last quick climb and BAM!!!! my left hamstring locks and cramps! hard! I get a couple more pedal strokes in to get to the top of the short climb and now its all down so I go no brakes down the decent gaining speed for the military climb while trying to stretch the leg out. I hit the Military climb and the leg locks again! I made it about 75% up on momentum alone and one legs hopped up the rest. I was hurting had to stop for a moment as I couldn't pedal! I took the moment to put my sunglasses in my camelpack, took the baton out and had my RF ID card ready (things I was gonna have to do at the end before I could clock out anyway. All while stretching that hamstring out and screaming in pain (that hurt so insanely bad!) after about a 30-45sec break I got back on my bike its Mile 10! I'm on the home stretch I hit the last decent sketchy fast! rip the turn to the fire road and wheelie out sprinting all OUT! I knew kerin would be right there and with the falling sun it was hard to tell who was who but she said she could tell who I was from my grunting and yelling as I flew by! (I was trying to show off ;) I hit the left hander into the camp grounds and leaned over so far I though to my self do my tires have tread this far over? I sprint hard out of the turn put my hands in the center of my bars my chin on my stem and turn my hardest gear all thru the camp ground, people turning to look and cheer me on as I'm not coasting in on this one. I was hammering all out! I got to the fenced in run up to the finish and was screaming I almost didn't make the last turn, I reached into my pocket tossed the baton to the timer and swiped my card. and collapsed in the grass. 1:12:57! 14th fastest lap in our division I was paying the price. My body immediately turned on me. My stomach was trying to push up what was in it which was nothing but maybe a bit of water. My legs were locking up and shacking. I made it back to the campsite but barely. I sat in a chair messed up! I didn't know what to do with myself I had a salt pill in my lap a banana, a nalgene, and a hotdog roll. I was trying to get this stuff down but couldn't. I then got in my tent stripped and got in my sleeping bag. for the next hr or so I had the cold sweats, shivered and pushed thru the nausea finally I was feeling good enough to get up. It was like an extremely intense hang over! Like I poisoned my own body with lactic acid or something. I got up and drank ~2 liters of gatorade, ate the salt pill (thanks Tony), ate the banana, ~1/2 a lb of pasta and 3 potatoes. I was feeling ok...... Activity

After pushing myself to the limit I learned that Jeff had done the same and that he puked and was in bad shape :( He had hit the top of the main climb in ~5mins faster than me and blew up from there. So after talking to Joe, and his ultra-endurance-athlete knowledge he said stop racing and just ride! So going out at ~1:30 am I did just that I just ground out the climb in my granny and had fun on the descents, night brought about a few odd things. It was Cold at the start it took the whole fire road to get my muscles warmed up by I was too burnt to jump on the trainer and spin to warm up. As I climbed up it got warmer..... once at the top it was nice, the wildlife was crazy, desert rats (mostly dead from getting run over) everywhere, clear scorpions (the really poisonous ones) where scattered about the trail, and about 1,000,000 different types of big spiders.... it was good motivation to not stop or get off your bike. I felt surprisingly good, my legs were responding when I wanted a quick push out of them and my HR was way down! I made one stop to help what turned out to be the solo women's leader who had a lill crash on a climb when she couldn't get out of her pedal, she was riding a single speed 29er...... She was pretty out of it, but kept going. I then was on the decent and while I wasn't really taking the chances I was on my 2nd lap I was having fun! My lights worked great and I was passing people left and right :) I ran up most of the short steep climbs but was enjoying the rolling terrain more. I finished out quick and felt good. Activity

After coming back from my 3rd lap I ate a HUGE bowl of cereal and drank about 2 liters of water/Gatorade. I ate 2 potatoes and went to bed ~3:45am. I was woken up at ~5:45am by Jeff he wasn't feeling so hot still and it was my turn to ride. I was TIRED! legs felt good, it kinda hurt to take a deep breath like my lungs or diaphragm was tired. But the main problem was I had a fog around my head, I was sleepy. I was kicking around the campsite trying to get my shit together but I was a mess. Jeff thank fully helped me out and got me on my way! I hit the trail and by this time I had woken up a bit and felt surprisingly good. I hit the climb and spun it out not as fast as my first 2 laps but faster than my night lap. I thrashed the descents, I felt good. My legs weren't totally fresh as I ran up a couple of the short steeps but I felt confident on the descents. I finished uber strong and had a very enjoyable lap! I was hungry for this whole lap! I def didn't eat enough but with my stomach still not 100% after my 2nd lap I forced myself to eat what little I did! That was it! After Chris turned in a sick lap and Joe rocked out his lap it was up to our ringer Tony to go out for his 5th lap! if he went out then it basically ment we would win our division! and We did!!!!! We hopped up on the Podium and won sick Yakima bike Trays! Activity

First ride back from my week off. and my tapper was more of a drop off than a tapper. I felt awful to start... Legs were strong but slow to respond, the lungs felt water logged and like parrot lungs.... either way I hit the ride pretty hard, and rode well, new setup on the bike is sick! Maxxis is the shit, I don't know why I ever stopped riding them.... just finished packing the car and cooked all my food wish me luck! Activity

Good final ride before the race! lately I've been keeping the rides under 2 hrs and really trying to put in that effort. Felt good down Lopez and up the first short climb. thru wagon wheel and up the next climb. Was feeling strong legs were tight (felt like I needed to stretch more) but good, up the waterfall climb and hit the power lines. I CRUISED! past 3 guys on my way up like they weren't moving! I was going so fast that I thought I had one more turn till the final push but before I knew it I was on the final asscent and at the top! We ran the tunnels and I felt fast, my game and in a rhyme. Felt smooth and fast on the climb out too. So then it was down Cobles and my tires are TOAST! can't hold anything off camber! down the waterfall and cruised back along the fire road. Felt good on the little up hill then I rocked it OUT up lopez! I def went at it 90% and felt tired but great! I was pushing hard gears and keeping momentum. Great ride now 1 week off and mentally prep for the RACE! Activity

Great quick ride. Started off a bit slow, but after we got to the top of the first section me and jeff put the hammer down a bit. I was really cautious and slow on the descents as I don't want to get hurt this late in the game and my tires are totally GONE! I'm holding off to get the maxxis on there right before the race so these IRCs are gone I can't hold a line for the life of me! Up the 52 climb I was feeling great on the first section, was going great up the bitch climb but stupidly lost my balance and dabbed :( powered up the next climb with gears to spare. Thur a couple of quick up I got to the final section, got stuck on the rut again! walked down did it again and got stuck again :( gave up and walked over that part and started again. The decent is already getting really loose, but I was slow and took it easy, no stops on the rollers then down E-ticket, and to the twists. no stopping at the Great quick ride. I cleared S-turns last like back in July of '07...... I then switched to clipless pedals and haven't cleared it since. I cleared it with authority!!! I powered up it with heavy gears, kept speed and kept going at the top, no stops, up the fire road climb in my middle ring, thru the up and down and back to the car in record time! My back was a bit soar after the long decent thru the canyon I didn't know if I was gonna be able to get up Sturns with my back hurting, I knew I had the legs but my back held out. More stretching and rest is going to be key next week! pickanik area and up S-turns....... I KILLED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!! I cleared S-turns last like back in July of '07...... Felt really good today, hit up the same ride was yesterday with Chris. felt pretty smooth on the initial decent. The quick climbs came with ease today. Past wagon wheel and up the powerlines. Felt good wasn't going as hard as yesterday but 80-85% and felt strong, a lill bit of lower back strain but was ok. Into the tunnels felt good had good flow and rythme. The climb out was good felt quick and strong! down cobbles I felt good, smooth actually caught air coming over both the humps! Down past the falls and back up Lopez. Went 85%-90% up lopez and felt great! The 3 ride weekend went well I'm not even that tired, but takin tomorrow off. Activity

2nd ride of the day was a lill longer then expected. But I felt stronger on the 2nd ride then the 1st. lill more distance but not as much climbing. felt realy strong on those quick steep climbs! cranked it up on the flats and thru the waterfall. Hit the powerlines climb and felt good, didn't give 100% but ~85% and felt really good at the top. then went and hit the tunnels and my tech skills felt on, hit a rhythm and was cruising. Pushed up the climb out of the tunnels and was rolling. Almost ate it on the cobbles decent on one of those big ruts but that is me being over confident. flowed thru the waterfall section, and back thru the canyon. Felt really good and fast on the fireroads coming out of the canyon. over wagon wheel and I felt really good up the steep short climb there. Then it was up lopez and I was cooking might not have been my fastest as I was still at 85%-90% but felt good. Water was perfect ~30oz, was a lill hungery at end but was tasting the pasta sauce from lunch on the climb (note to self less garlic on sauce used between laps). Lungs feel tired, deep breaths ,hurt a bit a sign that I am my diaphragm and lungs are tired. But I felt good. Activity

HOT!! it was a hot day! dry and in the mid 80's before we even got going at 9:30am. Again the first climb is too soon for me to be warmed up, but felt good after that. flew down the decent to the 52 and after retrying one spot cleared everything to the bitch climb. Got up the hard part of the bitch climb only to loose my balance at the top so I went all the way down and did it again! and cleared it. But I paid the price the ensuing climb hit me hard with the heat and no break and I didn't clear the top climb..... the rollers I did good, and all the way down E-ticket, thru the rock garden and into the picknick area before we stopped again! back was a bit strained at the bottom after all that decending! Went up S-turnes dabbed at the very bottom but cleared the rest! damnit I still can't clear that whole thing but I cleared the hard parts. After the guys fighting me a bit we did the extra credit climb. I made it further than wednesday night I really though I had it but those damn loose rocks are killer. Down and up through the canyon and done. The heat really got to me a bit but wasn't that bad. lots of water, some pasta, and rest PQC this afternoon. Activity

Was a bit tired "sleepy" when we started, but I hydrated more today and def ate more (jalepenos). Straight up that first climb didn't feel that hot HR was hi... but its a bad warm up anyway. Felt good on the ensuing slight ups, rocked out on the decent, and cleared the climb up to the 52 INCLUDING BITCH CLIMB that was a first! Almost made it thru the top section but dabbed as I took a line too far right. felt good on the ups and downs and down E-ticket and thru the lower section. ALMOST cleared S-turns! took one bad line dabbed and kept going! was getting tired but powered up the fire road climb (started to feel a little lower back strain) but then straight up Extra credit climb... Almost made it dambed then ran 20 feet thru the loose stuff then powered out on the decent/fireroad cleared the up and down and back to the car. Felt a bit slow, Jeff kept up with me well. I don't think I was riding slow though as my time is way faster then previous weeks! Activity

Good ride, cloudy day, cold.... wasn't feeling it on the start, but once we hit the bike trail I put the hammer down! wanted to feel out Joe and he was hanging! We it the next climb and I was feeling a bit burnt went out a lill hard.... took a long pull on the slight climb west into a stiff head wind. on the climb up to the 101 Joe put the hammer down early to discourage my attacks, but I gave him about 30 feet for a bit and once I saw him slowing abit I put in a HUGE effort! and sprinted away. felt strong on the climb up thru delmar no lill ring so far all day. Hit torrey pines and the cross wind on the decent killed us coming up to the climb. Joe was looking good on the start he started putting the hurt on me, but about half way up the climb I went all in! I sprinted all out for 15 sec, and almost popped! I struggled to hold the gap I opened up. but I held a 30yard gap on Joe to the top. My lungs were on fire! and chest was heavy! seriously didn't feel good at all, but after about 1min I looked at my HR was 120 BPM.... crazy good recovery! but I still felt like crap, on the ensuing section I spun the legs out and felt better. It was a great ride! Activity
