Rosarito to Ensenada

Sick ride this year!

Started out a bit slow as we were far in the back and didn't pass the start/finish till almost 10:20am.....

We were a bit disorganized at the start and I lost the others (joe, matt, garey)

After a few miles I realized that finding them was gonna be tough! too many people moving too fast.

So I put the hammer down and pushed myself.

The first couple initial small climbs I felt really strong, cranking thru them in my big ring.

Turning inland off the coast I realized that I was avg'ing almost 20MPH for the first 20 miles! nice!

hit the base of El tigre and started spinning the legs up, I did drop into my granny but never into my easiest gear. I kept it at 9MPH for most of the climb (think I dipped to 8mph on one spot where it was uber steep)

At the aid station at the top of El tigre I stopped for ~1min downed a glass of power aid and ate a gu packet and kept going.

The rolling terrain of the messa is the killer part, yea you climb ~1,000 feet but then its these short sheep rollers, 30mph+ on the decents....11mph on the ensuing climb....

Finally I hit the decent, and there was a nasty headwind coming out of the west! I didn't even break 40MPH.... and I was tucked and cranking!

I grabbed onto the wheels of a group as I turned back onto the Baja coastal hiway. Nobody was working really well together. I took a monster pull and as I dropped off 2 guys pulled thru but the rest made me go in to a spot 3rd in line.... So those 2 guys take nice pulls then I take another HARD pull (I'm ready to pop!) I fall off and again only 2 guys pull thru......

I'm like WTF... so after staying in the pace line my turn to pull was coming up again, just then a lone rider doing at least 30mph (we were going 25-26) comes by us..... I give it all I have! and jump onto his wheel.

I take a look back and we dropped that group like a bad habit! He was pulling me like a parent pulls a kid thru the grocery store. He let up a bit and looked back I said "I'll try and pull my weight here" so I took a pathetic pull :( I was only out front for 1 min and dropped back to 25 mph.... He came around me and I said "Sorry I'm pedaling squares those guys back there worked me hard" he said no worries and paced me into the finish straight, he sat up for a min and said "sprint ya for it" which was totally unfair as he had been doing all the work but I got in the drops and sprinted it out (calves were starting to cramp bad!)

I pipped him at the line :) 2:40:30 5 mins better than my goal time!

PS this caps a record 111.29 mile week for me!

Nice! so 30 mins later I saw the guys roll back to the finish meeting spot :)

We then downed lots of beers! good stuff

Indy Fab rebiuld

Well it has begun, I'm starting a rebiuld of my indy fab.

I figured it was worth it since I have been riding it in its current state since 2003....

The upgrades
Manitou Black 125mm fork
Mavic Crossland UST wheelset
IRC UST tires
Kaloy Seatpost
SDG saddle

All in all it should shave just over 4lbs off my bike!!!!!! ha crazy!

Parts started coming in today :)

I think I'm gonna try and install the fork sunday and hopefully I have all the new stuff ready for our pre-ride of the 12hrs of Temecula Course next sunday.

Last road ride before mexico.

Was going out to just spin easy but Matt was out to ride.

I didn't feel that good to start, I'm really starting to get the feeling for my warming up.

It really takes me about 15 mins or so to get in the groove, today it was turning onto Via de La Via.

I stepped it up there and took a good pull up that small climb, felt good up to the PCH and up del mar.

Dropped off at bit in the decent but made a go at catching matt on the last short uphill I got within 50 yrds but couldn't bridge the gap.

Good ride!

Mexico updates

Well I keep talking about this ride from Rosarito to Ensenada Mexico.

@ 10am saturday we leave from Rosarito and follow the Baja Coastal Hiway (think PCH just in mexico) Its pretty flat for the first 25 miles, then the coarse turns inland and we climb "El Tigre". The climb is 2 miles long and a 7.5% grade it leads to a mesa that then goes up to 1,000 feet and is full of rolling hills (steep rollers that can really get to you)

Then there is a huge long decent a quick flat before you hit the Coastal hiway again and its a slight decent all to the way to Ensenada!

My goal this time is to try and get to 2:50 minutes thats an avg of 17.5Mph.

here is the route.

so that is the deal.

Light riding week this week to save up my energy.

Then its lots of MTB'ing to get ready for the 12hrs of Temecula.

So last long ride before Rosarito.

Damn this one hurt! we road from sorrento valley to lake hodges and back.

no HUGE climbs per say but damn there were alot of rolling hills. I wasn't out to push myself but we did. Joe and I road well but the Road handed my butt to me!

Still having a few involuntary calf spazums.....

Monday off tuesday light road ride

Felt good at the start, hit the the second climb and was doing good got 75% up it till I tried a new line and cut back over some rocks lost my balance and fell on my left arm as I couldn't get my damn pedals out!

Felt good on the decent but its mad sketchy! we need rain bad!

On S-turns I was doing good till that one spot at the top that always gets me! lost my balance stayed upright but didn't clear it again :(

felt good on the last climb so that is good.

After work ride today.

Garey set down a pretty hard pace. Killed me at the start but I stayed on.

On the hill to Delmar I let Matt and Garey drop me a bit. Then I kept my pace up, I caught then on the turn back onto the PCH then I picked up the pace! Kept growing a gap all the way to The climb at torrey pines. At the base of the climb I sat up a couple times to see if I could find them. But I couldn't see then....but they were there.

with 25% of the hill togo I saw Garey starting to reel me in :( with 10% togo he had caught me I dropped it down a gear and picked up my pace but he matched me..... it was inevitable then with about 150 yards left garey passed me and shifted down a gear I tried to hold his pace (which at that point was 13 mph) bit U couldn't hang :(

I dropped back down to 10-11mph and Garey beat me to the top :(

It was a valiant effort but I just couldn't take it to Garey he's just to good! Koodos to Garey for PWN'ing me.

I tried to keep the pace up on the flat on the way to the decent. Matt caught me on the decent down the 5, and on the approach to the parking lot I said to Matt "one more good push?"

We took off again, held about 22mph Matt jumped out. I held his wheel and at Symbolic I shifted down and passed Matt. I pushed hard but held him off to the lot :)

I was spent! Matt's legs were shaking like crazy! (he hadn't ridden in awhile)

Glad I could hang tuff, feeling good for mexico in 2 weeks

Anyway, hit up penasquitos canyon for an after work ride. People have been sparse since gary had knee surgery.

But it was me and one other and had a good ride, did the power lines to intestines, down cobles then up the goat trail.... didn't clear it this time but felt good anyway.

Fuck sox lost :( damnit!

Long road ride tommorow I'll take my frustration out on the pavement.....

Feeling pretty good Rosarito coming up.

Garey got me moving pretty good today, easy pace on the first climb, garey set a pretty hard pace on the second climb.

We worked well together on the flats around the ranches of Rancho Santa Fe.

Felt pretty good up torrey pines outside, not my fatsest ever but I felt good.

Beat my best time by over 8 minutes!
