Probably the last ride of the year :) Was feeling really really lazy today but I knew I was less then 5 miles away from my 2,750 mile goal so I sucked it up and hit Van Dam peak for a lunch MTB ride.

Not my best showing but all things considered I was 2mins off my PR pace (and didn't push 100% I was prob at 85%) and with the recent rains there were some new lines, I cleaned everything nicely (thanks to lots of grip from the wet soil) and had a great 'ol ride :)

Sweet pre-xmas ride man! headed up to ATT with joe and set out for a nice ride. Hit the climb and wasn't feeling that great but set a easy but consistent pace. We paused at the first turn out then kept going to the top of Eco challenge and ripped it up on the decent :)

Saw Steve on the trail but we were gonna go back up and do eco challenge 2X so we kept on riding by and def was feeling smooth. We hit the road and climbed back up to the top and headed back down!

We stopped where Steve was building and watched him rock it out!!!

From ATT-122008

Sickness :) we rocked out the last section of trail and I finally hit the road GAP!!! why I thought that was a hard stunt who knows as I did it wicked smooth :)

I really like this trail but worry what will happen when the land managment issues really come to the forefront :( but for now I'll keep enjoying it and try to stay off the top section

Well I got up at the crack of damn.... well pre dawn.... well saturday night..... up at 5am on the road by 5:20 I got up to Palos Verde (sick town by the way) at 7:20.... yea I was the first racer there reg wasn't even open... at least I wasn't late :)

I tossed the seats back in the E and took a 20min nap. Just before 8am I started gearing up, it was fucking freezing out! sub 40 for sure. I tossed all all the clothing I had and got my number. I took a practice lap headed back to the car and dropped a layer. Took another practice lap was feeling ok but nervous. I headed back to the car and dropped down to just my jersey, bibs, knee warmers, and arm warmers.... Yup I raced all clad in spandex....

Got up to the line and tried to get a decent starting spot. They didn't do cal ups so but I let the guys that looked like they knew what they were doing take the front row I took 3rd row.

The bell rung and I got clipped in on the first shit and passed a few people going into the first turn and then I passed about 3 more in the second turn. I was in the top 3 as we headed up the first climb I lost a couple spots right here as a went out HARD at the start. But then I figured I was in 6-8th and settled in. there was one guy right behind me and I was keeping him off me. We hit the main decent and I was feeling ok but not that comfy on the road bike possession on the dirt.

turned up the 2nd climb this one was a run up with 2 boards and the guy behind me passed me, I remounted right behind him and chased him down the hill, in the next turn her took too much speed in to the corner and ran wide I took him on the inside. He was behind me back thru the start finish and I stayed ahead of him on the climb, we dismounted at the 1st board and ran across the water crossing I remounted and lost my chain...... so he passed me :(

I stayed close for the next 2 laps and I could see him at the sharp turns. On the last lap I tried to turn it up a bit but in the end I came up about 30yrds short of catching :(

Lots of lessons learned!

1.) get there early (well maybe not 1:45 early) and do at least 2 practiced laps and then prob go back and at least do the tricky parts a couple more times.

2.) I can go harder! I def could have gone harder and with only a 30min race I can go almost ALL out! I had way too much left in my tank at the end

3.) this is alot of fun and will def be a main concentration on mine next fall!!!

Fun evening ride! we headed down cobles and up powerlines, then down rocking horse and thru the water crossings, up again and down the scetch desecnt. We then climbed out of the tunnels and over to a new area to me, we went past tunnel 5 (which was closed duw to vandalism....) and down a sick new decent off the back of that canyon! Sick great trail! then up a paved climb to the car! Sick ride......

To bad Friday am the rangers went out and due to political bullshit and a bunch of whiny rich fucking pricks!!! All these trails have been closed..... I love it when the local government is so fucking screwed up that they don't listen to a huge mass of TAX PAYERS! who say they will donate their time to preservation of multi use trails and have their bigger (money laden) agenda on their mind..... Fucking assholes!

So got a CX race sunday and am thinking I'm gonna get killed..... but you have to start somewhere. Hit the hill warm up 2:04, #1 1:47 (seated), #2 1:53 (standing), #3 1:58 (standing) ok sprints legs felt ok but lungs were on fire!

Off the to park did a good set of back to back 10 suitcases and 10 portings. bobbled 2X but wanted to keep at it and see how I did with fatigue.

Then it was to the dirt path, up the first time hit the stairs and man it is tiring running up stairs while porting..... down again I feel comfy on the bike in the dirt not, I noticed a steel pole that was for a circuit workout about 12" hi and did a nice suitcase over that and then back up the trail. Ported and ran up the stairs and jumped back on.... rear tire was flat..... joy..... road it out on ~20psi..... I can't believe I got another flat!

Slow but better ride home, I put in a couple good efforts (esp thru miramar and down lairemont mesa) but I stopped a couple times as I was flat paranoid and kept checking my tires and I was really cautious as it was pitch black out and didn't feel like getting hit by a car.

Good work looking forward to my CX workout wednesday!

I cleaned up my IF and packed the jeep tossed joe’s/my bike on the back and off we were to ATT (Anderson truck trail) we hit the road and saw dark bad looking clouds as we headed toward the trail head. I geared up cycling shell, booties, cycling cap under the helmet, knee warmers, and my new Specialized glasses. Joe was making fun of me but 15mins into the ride the drizzle turned to all out down pour! And I was grinning as I was comfy and warm and dry. The trail was holding up well not much mud the drainage along the trail was well design so we kept going. We hit the main climb and the rain slowed but I was still happy to have the gear I did.

We made it to the ½ way point up and the rain was almost gone and we could see blue sky coming at us from the west. We pushed on to the top and made it up the climb in just over an hr not great but not bad. Now came the fun part see the ride is an up and down…. 3 miles and 2,000 feet of climbing on double track to then drop single track which has berms stunts and HUGE drops on it (all optional) as we get ready to descend I loose the jacket and the booties the sun comes out and my specialized glasses increase tint accordingly ( I love these things I mean I’m an Oakley whore but these are spot on!)

We get to it and man I love this trail, fresh off watching NWD9 I get it in my head I can ride like a stud I’m hitting wall rides and jumps I usually wouldn’t The dirt was epic! I mean this trail is usually fun but loose and tough to find traction not an issue yesterday roosting berms wheelieing out was the norm! We stop and short sessioned a couple rock sections and jumps and make it back to the car in ~1hr. what looked like crappy rained conditions turned into one the funnest rides I’ve ever had out here!

First MTB ride in a while :( 12 days! that is way too long :) I felt awful to start lungs burning ect ect then my left hamstring tightens up.... So I pulled back and spun easy gears trying to get some turns in with out making my hammy worse. We climbed up powerlines and then down rocking horse. The conditions were sick the dirt is nice and tacky! We climb back out and down cobles.

Good ride the hammy is tight but I hope I can stretch and have it feel nice again Sunday for ATT.

Well this was a lazy weekend topped with a couch to 5k run :)

Kerin and I were headed to Palmsprings and we stopped off in Temecula to run a turkey trot :)

The course was half dirt/pave and I was pretty excited to try and run a bit :)

1st mile was mainly downhill and I tripped the marker in 7:59.... So I slowed it down a bit and mile 2 was 9:33 and I tried to kick at the end (running up a short 20%+ grade) and finished under my 30min goal :)

damn running is hard on the muscles....I can still barely walk, fitness I felt fine, but the impact on my legs had harsh results :( gotta work on plyometerics this winter!

Ready for rain

Though there was way less then expected I tried fitting up my fenders
lastnight :)

Tuesday, November 25, 2008

Was going to ride into work and I was draggin ass after waking up, so I tossed the bike on the roof and did a CX workout at lunch instead. Only 3 times up saber hill this time. Warm up 2:10 161HR, then I hammered it out on #2 1:29 175HR, and I tried to put down a decent push on #3 1:58 166HR.....

Then it was off to the b-ball park to do mount/dismounts. No close calls but I did fumble alill on a couple dismounts. Doing that for 15mins is so tiring! and after all the repeats you start to loose focus and in a race that is when you slam a barrier! so practice is good!

Then it was off to the dirt path to do some dirt riding, I went down the path getting a feel for 60Psi skinnies on loose dirt. Then I went back up and did a nice run up and remount on the sandy stair section that will def be an integral part of my Cx workouts in the future. Then I went down again and went up the hill back to work out of the saddle. I need to work on my starts but I feel like I'm doign good work.

First MTB ride since the 12 hr race and back to trusty Noble Cyn :) Such a fun ride! Got to ride the big Freeride bike. The usual start up the ridge but today I was running clipless and man it made a difference. Down the main section and Hager was waiting with the camera :)

From noble-nov-08

Down the trail down the widow maker cleared it nicely, over the log jump (went back and hit it again :) , down barney rubble stopped at the big rock to take in the view for a min. Was riding alittle slow but I just wanted to enjoy the ride. We hit the desert section and I didn't make the big left but cleared the stariway to hell (2x went back up and did it again :) I felt good on the desert section clipless helped alot, now it was the last section and the turns were a bit loose but I love ripping the turns and I cleared the lower rock garden great ride as always!

So had hi hopes for a good CX workout and I did....ok....

Started off up Saber Hill on a warm up 2:23 161HR.... I went full speed out of the saddle on the next lap , 1:26 177HR. In to the pain zone I went as I went 1/2 out of the saddle next lap 2 1:48 170HR. now it was deep in the pain zone 1:46 168HR..... Now I was almost toast the legs were wobbly and the HR wouldn't go up....2:07 168

That was it for hills for me. Off to the park to work on mounts and dismounts. Found a nice big log and used it as a barrier, did about 10 repeats sprint at log dismount suitcase and remount and I was on my way. Then I did ~15 more alternating suitcasing and porting... I was totally done at the end!!!! and I have a huge bruise on my left shoulder.

Did did a lap around the dirt path at work and that was it what a tough lunch work out!

What is CX???? for those who may wonder WTF I'm doing see the vid below....

12hrs of Temecula pics

Just a couple pics so far was from the option whoops section the pic doesn't give the section any justice :( Cool pics but I was hoping it would show how sheep and sketch the section was....

Official results have us in 12th out of 29 teams, 3Man was the most competitive group so I'm pretty happy with it :) Already thinking SOLO beginner next year..... We'll see solo beginner won with 8 laps and 6 laps took 5th I think I could def take a top 10 if I train and pace myself next year :)

I’m a bit hazy now on this… I’m dead tired, head out just before dark I put my bar light on no helmet as I was planning on finished just before dark. Matt starts his lap just behind me we ride tempo till the climb I stop to pee (I totally over hydrated between laps) and he is gone up the climb (he on lap 2)

I take it easy and just set a goal of clearing the climb. I dabbed in one spot but got to the top in 27 mins. I ride all the stuff up top trying to just have fun and enjoy as I’m too tired to try and race it out, its about conserve and enjoy now. I rock the decent this time as I was not as tired from hammering the climb. Thru the tunnel of love, still pulling that CX move up the wall lookin like a PRO (people were all over this WALL section making it half way and then trying to unclip with out falling and then trying to walk up the CX run up was way faster and smoother!)
I finish it out and call it a night!

I’m pretty beat and with the 3 man team and the fast course people are turning 1:10 lap times with ease. I get about a 2Hr break and head out again. This time I don’t hammer out the main climb as hard and get up in 25mins. I have less traffic now so I ride all of the fun single track up top no CX moved required. It was hot now 90F saw a water station grabed a cup dumped it down my back and soaked my self (yea I was dry in like 10 mins)

Down the main decent I was trying to conserve a bit but was loosing focus at the task at hand, lost the front wheel on a hi speed corner and Wrecked HARD! I knocked the wind out of myself but got up and on the bike and started moving again…. Weezing and sucking trying to get my breath back I coasted till I could breathe again getting passed by 3-4 guys.

One guy asks if I was ok all I could do was put a finger up to single give me a min and then just gave him a thumbs up. I got my composure and said to myself ok that was a nice break not pound! I catch and pass all the guys that passed me (was pretty happy with that) and come into the finish 1:03.

9am hits and the gun goes off, no Lemond start, it’s a parade lap around the camp grounds, I get toward the front pack with the pros and spendex clad crowd as I didn’t wanna get caught up in any stupid crashes by people who don’t ride in a pack. And it def did happen behind me.

I hit the course and the fire road up to the main climb and dial it back as I’m out of the craziness. I try and recover a bit from the pinning I gave it on the parade lap, and hit the main climb. I’m getting passed here and there but I’m also passing people. I hit the top in 22mins (that is 3mins faster than fastest time I did in April)

Hit the first decent and pass a handful of uber spandex clad suckers grabbing their brakes like ol ladies…. Hit the technical sections up top and more great climbers with no tech skills getting in my way, there was a great option up top Ride a NASTY loose rocky ravine or take 3 switch backs to the right… I ride the ravine almost die pass like 10 people all piled up in the switch backs SUCKERS!!! Guy behind me follows and I hear him crash out behind me  he was ok at least he was trying to get back on his bike when I looked back.

I bridge the gap to the next group of riders and we hit another switch back section and people are dabbing and walking half on the bike. I dismount toss the bike on my shoulder and run around a handful of people, do a beautiful CX mount and off I go  man I’m liking these CX workouts helping my XC racing also!

We hit the next climb and a couple of the guys/girls I passed on the switch back catch me…. We hit the main decent and I’m mixed in with a group that is ok at descending but not great I see a whole line of peeps ahead so I sit up a bit and try and recover a bit as I’d have to pass like 10 people to get up front and really move. We get to the next climb and I PIN IT!!!! As I know the climb is short and I don’t wanna be behind these people on another decent. I slam it and hit 195!!! As I enter the single track at the top of the climb a guy passes me and I’m like great this guy is gonna hold me up on the tunnel of love (the next SiCK decent) we hit the descent and this guy takes OFF! He is on a hardtail Sworks Carbon, I follow and we are cranking I’m at 187 descending but I’m hanging on. We come up on groups of 2-3 people and he starts BARKING at people to get out of the way and I stay on his wheel using him as a pick! Its was sick at one point there was a quick up and down and I passed a guy as I aired out the top and it was single track and I know my rear wheel was a lill close to the guy I passed I apologized as I speed away (maybe it was a dick move but my momentum was awesome and I wasn’t slowing down!)

We finish the section I thank the guy for his descending skills he says “I’m old I have to use gravity when I can”, I reply “I’m fat I hear ya” we ride tempo together on the next short climb and after a bit he pulls away

There was a fast fire road into a 90 deg left and up what looked like a WALL! No chance at riding it way to steep, I saw it that previous night so on the run up I shifted up to and easy gear, swung my leg over the seat made the turn and CX style ran up it and jumped back on and passed a couple more peeps in the process, damn that move was FAST! . We go thru another section and we hit the option I think was stupid, not being a pussy I ride the sick whoops much to the shagrin of a camera man right there I tried to give him a good shot and dropped a nice rocky line down  Over that hump and hit the run in to the finish and put my head down and cranked!
