Kross-tober fest

up early out the door by 6:40am for the 1:45 drive to Bonnelli for Kross-toberfest!

Got there about 8:30am, parked and headed to reg. got my number pinned it and got dressed.

I got in 2 full laps of the course before the juniors races started. Fast paved section to start then dive into the dirt the course was generally really wide and there was TONS of room to pass. Then 1 small run up with barriers, about 900 tight turns but it flowed so well!! couple quick steep ride ups and 1 highspeed barrier section.

I got in a really good warm up after taking 2 laps as a cruising pace, I hit the pavement and did about 20mins sprinting it out on a small hill for 20sec ea time around getting the HR up to LT.

We staged and there were no call ups for the 4s I got 2nd row. Whistle and we were off, I hit my pedal 1st try and came around teh guy in front of me, I was in the drops banging thru gears head down killing it! I down shifted as I entered the turn into the dirt... I was 1st by alot! a few bike lengths! The 1st 180 deg turn I expected to get pushed off my line but nobody was there I had started out with a MASSIVE sprint! around a few turns and I backed it off alill, up the first run up I was still in the lead but now people were on my wheel I fought for 1st for about 1/2 a lap then on an open fire road a guy came around me then almost took me out when pulling in fornt... ASShole he def didn't hold any like of line... so in the next turn I late braked he left the inside open so I stuffed it in the corner pushing him wide.... I stayed in 2nd till the barrier section where I lost 2 places... (2 other guys) my HR after the barriers was 192... I haven't seen that in a WHILE! after the barriers I was too slow to get back on the bike and 1 and 2 pulled away a bit and the guy I stuffed was on my wheel. I started to really feel my start and started to fade toward the end of lap 1.

We hit the pavement and I grabbed a wheel and sat on, the 2nd lap I held my spot well but again in the barriers I lost a couple places not in the dismount or remount but in the 300 yrds after the barriers as I woudl be so redlined running that once back on the bike I woudl try and push it but I had nothing for about 30sec till my HR came back down....

I could see the leaders ahead not far off top 5 were not far away! Lap3 I would almost catch the top group but lost them after the barriers again...

lap 4 I faded, and was caught by a small group of 3 I hung in there for a bit thinking ok I'm not going to catch the leaders but if I conserve I bit I can win a sprint on these guys. I was sitting 3rd wheel of the 4 with 3 turns left an uphill tight 180 I rode right on the guy in front and cut inside him on the right but a left was coming and I was going too fast and left the door open for him to pass back but I pulled it out... I was 2nd wheel in the 4 fast straigh I was in the drops tucked into the lead guy. the last turn was off the grass right off a curb. I saw an opening on the right indide but the leader shut me down. I had to grab a handfull of brake. The guy 3rd wheel took the outside a much better line! came around the 2 of us! I got in the drops and sprinted it out with him and lost the sprint by half a bike length :(

8th/25...

I learned alot! I need to work on my recovery after running sections (mainly hi speed dismounts), I have a descent start sprint but I need to work on gauging it a lill more as I didn't need that big a lead going into the dirt. Also I learned that when it comes to the last turn and you are sitting on why try and take the fast inside line... I was sitting on and had him in a sprint... if I went outside I could have started my sprint way earlier and def had 7th.... next time!

my HR monitor clicked off mid race but avg was at least 185bmp for 43mins....

Socal Epic 50

So the Socal Epic 50 the reason why I have not been updating this blog I have been training too much for :)

Friday night Tony and I head up to camp in what is turning out to be a fun tradtion for vail lake races we grab sushi as a pre-race meal then head off to setup camp and crash.

6:30am wake up call its 40F out and I'm sleeping in the Element I turn the car on blast the heat to warm up as I eat my 3 PB&Js for breakfast and sip water. I hit up the riders meeting and grab my number get dressed its game time! I do a couple laps around the camp ground to loosen up a little but don't get the HR up much.

9am hits and we are off a parade lap around the camp ground so I get to the front of CAT 3 and look around seeing taking mental notes of people. I see 2 guys looking like they wanna stay up front FRS guy and blue guy on green 29er... we hit the dirt and the first lill bump up and I start mixing in with the CAT 2 guys. My HR is 180... but I don’t feel like I'm working hard at all actually I'm telling myself to slow and take it easy and I am... nerves I guess. We hit the first main climb tight single track switch backs its a parking lot I just get off and walk. I see FRS and blue guy about 15 riders behind me :) I pass a few people where it gets wide up top and then down SKETCHY single track to tunnel of love I pass about 5-6 people walking down this tech part I make dirt bike noises :) Down tunnel of love and onto the ambulance climb, I'm middle ring not killing it but climbing well, I look over and see FRS guy still going down tunnel of love SWEET! I must have a 4-5 min lead! Up top we roll over a few bumps and make our way to the top of the damn climb (that we are going down this time) I lean back and start rockin the down... not taking chances telling myself the race is won on the climbs and you can only loose the race here not win it! BAM front pinch flat.....! FUCK!!!

My decision to run tubes and light race tires bit me in the ass but I ran them for weeks before the race to make sure they could take the beating.... damn it!
I swap out the tube and get passed but both blue guy and FRS guy! I'm trying to stay calm having little trouble with the bead I get it on hit the CO2 get it on and I'm off... 30sec later BAM!!!!! front bead goes out tire blows open like a black marshmallow and jams up in my fork crown I get off the bike right as the front tire jams (that would have been a 20mph over the handle bars if I didn't get stopped) I get the bead back on hit my last CO2 and get rolling I'm way fucking behind now! I stop at the next aid station at the bottom of the down they have a pump I check my tire pressure it was low I fill and tell myself hammer this next flat people will use it to rest before the big climb. Hit it now and you can catch! I hit the fucking gas and ripping past people in my big ring doing 25-30MPH (44/12 most of the time!) I hit the base of the climb I see BLUE guy and FRS guy just ahead (I caught then in less then a mile!) ok calm down it s all set keep um in site you got 4hrs to pass :)

The main climb was about 900' in a mile.... wicked steep and loose in spots I spin easy 22/34 HR in the 170s I'm climbing up to FRS guy and pass him... (never saw him again) I see blue guy I ride easy I hike alill in a rockie section try and really take it as easy as I can after hitting the gas like that. The guy is pretty fast, I pull along side we talk a bit he is from AZ, flag staff.... so he lives at like 5k them or something I'm sure... We ride together for a bit but after a few ups and downs I drop him on a small bump (not trying to he just kinda fell off)

I get to the easy part of the loop flatish fresh single track, I can feel sharp bits everywhere hitting my legs the fresh cut single track is in some pricky areas... I hit a paved road section and I can feel my rear tire now is going flat!!! fuck.... I have 1 tube but no CO2 or pump.... I know there is an aid station in a couple miles up this lightly paved road, I am working hard now HR in the 180s to keep the speed up as I'm rolling on straight rim now!!! I get to the aid station no pump!!! crap, a guy working it had a CO2 life saver I swap out the tube as I'm doing so BLUE guy passes me... ok I can catch again I check the tire like 3 times for thorns. I get it full and I hit the GAS!!! I'm rippin single track, I get to a fire road the DAMN fucking rear tire is going flat again!!! I get over the little finishing climb down to the pits and as I'm coming in I'm yelling rear wheel, or so I though my pit crew were saying I was really just freaking out saying "check the bike" oops I need to work on my nerves in races...

I get off my bike Kerry tosses the bike in the rack swaps out my rear wheel for my boat anchor stumpy freeride/all mnt wheel.... I load up with water, gels and hit the trail

As I turn up the switch back climb 4 the 2nd time my stomach turns south! I'm bonking! I'm bonking bad!!!!! trying to chase back hard 3 times in 1 lap had killed me... but what was making it worse was since my stamach was going I was too afraid to eat/drink.... I walked up bridges (sad as I can rip that climb) I road the decent down the crazy stuff no problem on the next climb I settled in and ate some tried to hydrate but as soon as I would drink my stomach would cramp!!! I road as slow but steady tempo knowing BLUE guy was gone :( I got to the top of the damn climb and road well on the down. I hit the flat section where I chased the 1st time and was so fucking slow :(

i hit the base of the main climb and just started walking I was passing people walking also and they were hurting 1 guy full out blowing chunks! 2 guys just sitting in the grass legs cramped couldn’t walk we are at mile 32ish here and at hr 4. I'm thinking well at least I'm not these guys. Just then I see Ed a guy I trained with...in my cat... Ed was like scott? wtf you ok? I was like I'm bonking bad, I said "There is a guy in a blue jersey on a green 29er I think he is in first catch that fucker" Ed slowly went out of sight as he walked alill but road alot more of the climb then me. I was in salvage mode I'd push it up a bump and get a wave of puke feeling! I couldn't get my HR over 160.... else I'd get stomach cramps.... I kept it moving no stopping no rest I knew even if I moved slow if I kept moving I'd finish well.

on the back side of the lake the thorn areas I was scared 1 more flat and I was done someone was gonna have to come get me, I made it out ok :) Hit the paved section and into the single track. i still felt like ass but could feel the finish! coming out of the single track I knew I had 1 more climb, I got caught by a guy in CAT2 I got behind him he said he wasn't feeling well I said I was about to puke but we are finishing strong or puking trying he agreed. We hit the final climb him on front me right on his wheel tight single track tech climb short but about 300' up. I'm on this guy "lookin good, even tempo nice work" my stomach feeling what ever is in it its coming out! I look at my HR monitor I'm up at 180 again, I literally swallow back puke! I'm not sweating anymore either I only drank 20oz in the last 2.5hrs! I'm coaching this guy on till I think he got sick of hearing me and was like "you can come thru" I pass him up top and we ride together down back to the camp ground its nothing but a few turns and 1 lill bump left I slam big ring the guy is on my wheel, I look back he is hammering to stay on, we hit the lill bump I come out of the saddle this is it all I have!!!! I drop the guy I stay big ring hammer out the pavement, people are cheering us on I catch 3 more people here (none in my CAT(3) all CAT2 I have the elbows on the bars head low cranking away...

I make the last turn back onto dirt I can hear Kerin, Kerry, Coach Eric, I stay low and hammer, I give a quick look back to see if I'm going to get piped nobody! I roll no hands over the line, no hands on the air as I know I didn't win the CAT but out to the side in celebration as I'm happy with my effort!

Kerry confirms it 3rd!

Turns out Ed did catch the "blue guy" and won the CAT nice work ED!!!!
I learned alot about marathon MTB'ing I had the speed, I had teh fitness, I had the bike (which was wicked fast!!!) I lacked experience, a cool head, and stans tubeless :) I will learn from my mistakes and take it to the house in CAT2 next year :)

Long over due

So much going on never have blog time anymore...

Well after the last XC race I got to business training! I even squeezed in a high altitude trip to Colorado and did some road/Cx with JP

Getting home I hit the trails hard! Hills on Jackson, weekends of 3-4 hr rides hitting every hill I coudl find! I'm down to my lightest weight I can remember... 140lbs. The legs had INSANE snap last week before I beat on them for 10days straight!

11 days till the big race and its taper/recover time! Some hard efferts here and there but saving it up for the 50 miles and 6,000' of climbing I'll be attacking!!!

New team kits are in and the Oakleys from a new contact J, so cool :)

I have to update my milage but I'm pretty sure I'm gonna have the biggest MTB milage of my life this month. After the race it will be straight in to CX season!

Racers and Chasers

So today was a good day!

Lets hit the start, camped over night to be at the race venue on time for a good warm up... but with the early start time ect ect I still only got in a 10min warm up... but I did get the HR up to 170-180 for a couple mins warm the legs up.

We started out of the moto gates which was cool! and straight up a small climb... I went over the top front half of the pack. into the first climb and I was held up in some traffic but I got thru (this 1 reason I should have gone out harder more on that later) So thru a ton of tight trails the course was loose! but I managed to keep the bike upright as people crashed around me. Hit the main desent and was held up again in slower traffic but I was cool and waited for the right spot to pass. I catch a guy in a GT jersey on a carbon Zaskar after he dabs in a spot and think nothing of it... *yea he was in the lead in my catagory... aka I was now in the lead and had no idea....* we hit the 2nd climb and the 10yard gap I had on him was gone we fought it out a bit but he got the best of me and he gapped me about 50yards toward the end of lap 1

lap 1 29:32 HR 176 avg

Lap 2 things calmed down and I started to race my own race gone was the dust of the wheels in front of me and I was really enjoying the new bike! The wheels were uber light and I could def feel them spin up fast on the climbs! I was getting use to the uber steep angles on the descents and kept it together nicely even in the deep sand! I was trying hard but just could make much headway on the GT guy.... I finished strong and when results posted I felt kinda dumb..... I mean I def had more left in the tank and if I had know he was THE man to catch I prob could have closed what turned out to be a 30sec gap.... lesson learned :)

Lap 2 27:23 HR 171 avg

Lessons learned get in a good 20min warm up! hitting LT!

Always go for the hole shot, slow traffic is worse then having people try and pass you as you recover later...

and Always have the fucking hammer down! next time :)

Big thanks to Pronghorn for the bike and wheels. Huge thanks to the guys (Mike and Doug) at North of the Boarder bike shop for all thier help and the jersey to race in today since team kits werent in yet! Glad to do ya proud :)

Catching up again

Well I'm not totally caught up on this site but I'm getting there with so many new tools I'm using (training peaks and twitter) trying to see how this blog is going to work its way into things...

But the last week as been crazy really started to get stuff going for the 50 mile socal epic my first real solo endurance race will be Oct 3rd http://www.12hrsoftemecula.com/SOCALFATTIREEPIC.html

Started my training plan via Coach Zippy http://zippyathlete.blogspot.com/ good stuff last week was 8 days straight with a couple days in the gym that made me nice ans sore (weak weak upper body and core....) but its good stuff!

This week I had 3 bike goals, follow my training plan, finish the Pronghorn biuld, and get in shake out rides before the http://www.racersandchasers.com/ race saturday!

I got her biult!!! here minus the egg beaters, carbon Pringhorn cockpit, and Stans no tubes kit. but ridable non the less.

So fresh and so clean!

Diggin the white cable housing! fits so nice!

Front to back I'm impressed with the bike.

Fork, magura is stepping up its game in the suspension arena.... the fork is sub 3 lbs..... 100mm and is stiff! I did some tweatking and think I found the right settings for me and broke her in yesterday.

The controls: the X9 shifters are def a step up over the SLX... the shiftign is crisper, the levers are all medal no plastic just has a nice fit and finish. the Elixer brakes I have a love hate relationship with them.... I love the front but just like on my stumpy I hate the rear... it was swish from teh box, I rebled it 2X and got it ok... but still not great... but they are nice and light... Teh ESI grips I didn't think I was gonna like... the weight was the right # but they seemed so squish but on the bike I like um!

Frame, well I'm plesently surprised at this one... I knew it was gonna feel race like very agressive and I thought it would be unforgiving but its not! I was saying to the guys while pedaling thru a canyon it felt like a hardtail but when I looked down I coudl see the shock movin a lill bit. It climbed like a hard tail esp in pro-pedal (which with the shock on top sooo easy to flip the switch) but when it got tech and you hit the rear wheel on a water bar you didn't get jared it soaked it up nice... (not plush like the stumpy but not ruff like a hardtail) Going down is where I was really worried and at first I was sketched!!! the front is twitchy and fast reaching from the steep head tube angle.... I was worried here but after riding for a bit I started to get used to it. I mean I'm not gonna be able to bomb tech downhills on this think, but is tight switch backs it was manuverable and super responsive! dare I say a fan of its decnding? I mean its not a desender but not as bad as I thought it woudl be and shined in teh tight stuff that wasn't too steep!

Drive train: the X9 stuff was great I set it up and aside from the odd Hi mount top pull front derailuer it was easy to dial in. No issues on the first ride with it!

Wheels: wow! I think its the best part of the bike! The pronghorn 1490 wheels were uber fast! the Kenda smal blocks roll fast! the hub sounds King like with out being uber loud engaugment was instant! I'm so pumped on these wheels, we'll see how they hold up as they are about as light as my CX wheels....

Only had one trailside fix, seat post was slipping down a bit and I think I'll ruff up the post a bit to get that to stop but after cranking down on it no issue after that. At the end of the ride my headset was loose sso I needed to tighthen that also but after a really fun ride on some of SD's funnest trails the verdict was GREAT!

Oh and I figured out how to post ride details from my training peaks account!

Notes Nice easy spin out there with Charles. Started out easy, and moved up the pace toward the end of spring. Failed again to get to the very top and fell on my back as I tried to get un clipped... Down oak fun but getting sandy! up the switch backs I was dumb and dabbed on one mid way up. So I went all the way back down and redid them all! and cleared them with authority the 2nd time :) Down barrels always fun and out great ride back after a couple days off legs are feeling better!

Blog?

So yea haven't been posting much with the move, and stuff but I salvaged June @ 282 miles and am off to a great start in July before NEK on the 18th! 154 miles in 7 days so far :)

today I rode home from work with a lill detour to commute a bit with Ryan as he made his way back from la jolla, made it out to Torrey pines hella fast 45mins! thought it was gonna take 60.... then we headed north along el camino real, to via de lavia and then west to the coast, Ryan took off north I went south up Del mar, and then up the inside of Torrey pines felt good, not uber fast but good. Then at the top my cavles started to cramp a bit it really took away my power for the rest of the ride but I made my way thru la jolla and over to PB and up to my house :) great ride now I just have to commute back in, in the am....

Bike to Work

Well since my car was at work since I rode home friday I thought it would be best to come get it today and put in a few hrs.

Cloudy skies at the coast I was hoping for sun as I rode in land and I got it! once I hit the 805 BAM! sun :) temps in the 70's a perfect recovery ride from yesterday, I kept the pace medium never hard and cruised the empty holiday trafficless streets.

Thru miramar and up into scripps ranch, down to poway road and up sabre springs very few cars, didn't hit many lights and just enjoyed a cruise in!

Epic in Idyllwild

Epic a word used so easily and plainly when talking about bike rides/races these days.... but I think I can use it here....

Plan was to get up at 6am and on the road by 6:30 am to get to Idyllwild by 8:30... I for some odd reason am all pumped up to go and after sleeping for only a couple hrs I get up at 5am and on the road at 5:30am.... Tired as hell I get to Idyllwild at 7:30 and drop the seats in the E (that thign rules) and pass out for an hr... well more like dodge in and out of sleep for a bit)

8:30 rolls around I roll out of the car pumped to be riding but def not in the shape I'd like to be....

We start out on the 24hr race course and hit the main climb straight out, not a bad climb it was no damn climb but I am sitting like 3rd wheel and hurtin abit the HR just doesn't wanna come up and I'm sleepy :)

We do a rippin fun desecent into a valley and climb a lill more, we turn left and climb more now its time for some fun! we hit a nice single track down! and I'm feeking scketchy not sure why... then BAM!!! I'm on my face! literally front wheel turns after grabing some air left shoulder and face hit the ground.... my face is covered in dirt my visor hits my nose.... I'm ok just shaken up... yea lesson learned HURT OFF YOUR LOCK OUT WHEN DESENDING!!! had teh hero cam on the bike so footage to come...

So I enjoyed the down a lill bit but was takin it easy biudling the confidence back up. We get down then climb the same fire road back up and hit another down... now I'm havin fun! rippin along roosting corners, I'm leading now and rippin down :) I have no idea where I;m going buts its fun!

We get down and I'm feeling like myself again just alill slow on the climbs, we hit another single track they are tight! can't open it up but lots of tech fun climbs and downs, we find a lill drop and I session it a bit finally hitting the bigger side of it :) Yea I'm back :)

We go thru endless single track for the next oh 3hrs before stopping for lunch and man I can use it! fig bar, PB&J, and I kill my camel back.... still got 1hr+ to ride but I'm well hydrated and we got great weather.

We hit some of the funnest single track on the way back to the race course, lill drops, lots of big rocks, hits, and a really fun big roll in that I try 2X to ride the nose down, I could only get the rear a few inches off the ground coming down but it was afun! thru some really cool logs and rocks and back to the fire road and to the race course.

Now its time to go down!!!! and down we go! rippin and flying the trail is really loose over hard pack so I'm sliding all around but its fun! (I've started to get use to the this socal stuff) WOW so much fun, half the group splits off and we option another climb that is part of the race course, nothing nasty just grinder lill bit of tech up, fun dare I say even at hr 4.... We hit another rippin descent! rocks walls, lill hits good stuff, then back to the car!

I down some choc cold soy milk and some sport beans and we are packed up and off to our 2nd ride of teh day :) I quick shuttle run down Thomas Mnt.

We drop my car at the bettom and drive up the 1700' to the top. Random spoting of the day Tinker Juarez was coming down as we were driving up.... the guy is a machine!wasn't feeling at the top the dirt road bumpy car ride had made me a bit car sick.... But it was on! ~5 miles of down to come NO CLIMBS!

I get out front and to my surprise I start to feel a lill better and am GONE! lots of tight switch backs, loose rocks, tight trails, and I'm loving it! We stop a could times to regroup I'm just chillin up front rippin around takin some fun lines and enjoying the ride!

short ride but fun and well worth the drive! Time for a burrito and the 2hr drive home a 2 ride Epic in Idyllwild comes to an end.

Lake Hodges Ride

So after the lack of sleep stopped me from riding to work on national bike to work day so I desided to do the ride home today :)

Left work and headed north up Pomerado, the legs weren't feeling that good, little stiff and lacking pop.... I got up to Lake hodges and crossed the new pedestrian bridge :) cool pic

So accross the bridge and off up into southern escondido... I turned west on via rancho parkway and cruised down a bit till I got to Felasito... thats where I hit a nasty short climb! that hurt... continued to climb till I go to lake side rd this was the best part of the whole ride! I descended down to the lake.

Then the road twists and turns and winds around the lake, no traffic, in the trees, so cool! That ended when the road turned away from the lake and up! I mean UP! short but my 36/25 hated me spinning like 40 rpm standing....

on to del dieos hwy and up to the hodges damn. the traffic was moving fast and was alill scray esp since at the damn is a pass and the wind was whiping! in the face and was pushing me around alot.

Up and down the rode lill climbs here and there and up into Rancho Santa Fe wow people got money there! thru the center of town and west into a nasty head wind...
Down to the 5 and I was off to the coast... still a long way to go.

Down past dog beach and every lill bump is killer on my legs and I'm out of water and have to piss....

Thru Del mar and down to torrey pines I knock out the inside at a respectable pace chasing down a rabbit I had in a UC cyclery kit. I hit the golf course surprised I feel as good as I did... I'm getting hungery I have no food but I downed 2,00 kcal so far that day....

I stop at a light catching my next rabbit, and old guy who is fit lookin! He is in a shop kit and rockin a Cervelo and a power tap... "I say hi hows it going" he looks at me with a blank look and ignores me.... light turns green I ride ahead he sits on my wheel for a bit I'm expecting him to come around soon... I take the right toward UCSD fast! and open up a gap and that was the last I saw him... I really hope he was on a recovery ride and got that stick out of his ass....

past UCSD and down to the scrips pier... I'm going like 40MPH and a guy in an old bronco thinks that is a great place to bang a 3 point turn.... I slam on the brakes and cross behind him as he starts to back up and I'm in on coming traffic.... scary moment! I wait for him to catch up and at a stop sign I give him a FUCKING hear full! He shrugs I spit on his passenger window and take aright.... dick....

I head up to la jolla and all the fake boobs are out.... over to bird rock I see a portapoty and think jackpot! but it was for a construction site and it was locked....

I keep heading toward PB and think ok I'll hit the beach bathrooms at grand so I take a pit stop there and grab a gatorade damn I needed that I would have pounded the whole think but had a few miles and one climb left.

Down garnet... why did I take garnet... I don't know it was cool to see the bars packed with people and the traffic on grand is a bit scary... but I always run into Aholes on garnet.... I couple of hicks in a Bro-dozer blows his air horn right next to me to try and scare me... I didn't actually jump that much, to my surprise.... he gets stuck at a light later on he catches up again and his bro cigarette smokin passenger laughs and says "nice spandex fag" I reply "your the ones beepin at me and checkin me out...." he looks mad and I don't take it any further for fear he'd try and run me off the road.... dick....

Up balboa it didn't hurt as much as I thought it would and I cruised home... tired

Col Du Cookie

Haven't been out on a lunch ride as of late with all my sleep issues and it being daylight savings, but I hit the road with the guys today.

We hit up monster Cookie and it was fun as always. Out the main desent to saber springs I was out front in the wind abit but toward the bottom I tried to get in on some wheels and not do too much work before the climb. We were coming up on the base of Pomerado and the pace jumped up! I was dropped a bit but came back picking guys off one at a time till I got up on Dom's wheel with Dave and Rob just ahead of us. We caught them at a light and then Dave has a shoe issue and had to stop for a min. We kept the pace high knowing he'd catch and Dom took the front. Rob started to ride away but we had a lot to climb still. Dave came streaming by I jumped his wheel but didn't hang on long Dom got his wheel and then passed him as they closed on Rob and took the lower part of the climb.

We regrouped and headed up the 2nd half of the climb, I busted out early and kept the pace high. I looked back and had about 50yrds so I kept my head down and really opened up a gap! I took the col du cookie by a large margin then shut it down to wait for the guys.

Dom came by flying and I jumped back on rob's wheel Dom wasn't gonna let anyone pull as he wanted to ride us off his wheel and he almost did, I just hung on and we chilled for a bit. Down Down Down Down we went Donny got a nice gap on us as he is a Big strong desender and opened up enough of a gap to catch all the lights as we caught all 3!!!!

he had a HUGE lead on us going up pomerado, the long 3% up we took turns in a wicked paceline! each taking nice pulls, I dug really deep and we road one guy off our wheels, then Dom took a dig, I slid in 2nd wheel as Rob didn't wanna pull yet. I took another dig and flicked. Rob pulled thru big and when he came off he was done and didn't stay on Dom's wheel.... we had ridden the whole group off... and still didn't catch Donny. 3 of us regrouped at a light and up the last bit of climbing we went I though we must be getting close to him... last left and there he was Dom bridged but I got caught in traffic and didn't make the light.

I finally got moving again and got them insight but there was work and I came up about 100yrds shot of catching on :)

Great ride!

SD bay

Great easy road ride today, chilled out and headed around SD bay with Jeff

Down from my house it was a gloomy cloudy may grey day but WTF at least its not 100F out. Downtown we grabbed our ferry tix (good thing) and headed past the convention center/ petco park and off into the industrial areas of national city.... We chatted, actually I was chatty... Down they the car lots an across the 54 bike path we weren't putting but not screaming.

Into Chula vista we were making good time, past the marina and onto the rockin new bike path that leads to the strand. We picked it up a bit on the strand hangin around 20mph but there were alot of people out today.... Off the strand and around the golf course we went under the bridge and up to the fery port where the line for the F'ing ferry was a mile long seriously...

we skipped to the front handed the guy our pre-bought tix and on we went :)

took the ferry accros and saw some local wild life

got the legs moving again and out of down down we had some guys catch us at a light and I was feeling warmed up again so Jeff on my wheel I cranked it up and for a lill bit they were staying with us but after a lill while Jeff yelled ok they are gone :)

We skipped the trip around fiesta island as we were both hungery and talking non stop about food! It was now the only climb of the day up to clairemont. We started out slow and agreed to chill till a fat guy on a flat bar road bike came screaming by us at the base of the climb... Soooo I caught him passed and dropped the hammer to just get the climb over with :) Back to my place for some food :)

Sweet Water Ride from Scott Holland on Vimeo.

Sweet Water Ride

This one was fun! Joel was in SD for work and Jeff was patient as we were like 30 mins late :)

The GPS only said 14 miles but this was an ass kicker no flat section up or down that was it! But damn it was run terrain!

Alill lost but finally got to the trail head from the lot and hit the trail, right away 4 steep switch backs! fun get the HR up :) down into the canyons it was hot as hell!!!! 90 easy in the canyons no breeze! Tracker around and found the swtich back descent I wanted to find (was rockin the new Hero wide angle so vids to come!) down to the river bed more ups and down fun single track out to the steel bridge chilled for a min ate a cliff bar and hit it back.

Back along the river bed we options around the big climb but still had an as kicker up to the gazebo and down cactus hill up some switch backs again we ran along side the res but it was up and down up and down! Finally we hit the switch backs we went up earlier fun down then small climb out and up to the car :)

Racers and Chasers pics

RR

Well I had high hopes for this race but life got in the way a bit :) BUt the fun never ends :)

I went out way too late and ate way too much mexican food the night before and I was tired and my stomach was killing me this am.... not a good start...

Got to vail lake warmed up with Kerry and could just tell the legs were gonna hate me today... no matter I'm gonna have fun :) and that I did!

The start was prob my best start ever! I was 2nd row and got really up front! I mean I was sitting 4-5 wheel going into the first climb but that is where that ended :) I got passed by like 8 guys right there (not all in my case but some were) Down and around the marine crops climb and it wasn't thinning out this crew had come to play!

Up to bridges and we caught the back end of the Experts (who had a 1 min head start) I passed a couple experts (why not they are doing more laps :) and actually passed a few peeps in the switch backs! We got to the first saddle and here is where Robert (race director) decided to get midevil on our asses... instead of climbing more then ging down we went down dragons back and down burning calves... (where a guy in front of me almost lost it and if he did my only option was gonna be to manual and run his ass over:) Down the jump trail and all the way back to the start finish...

He is where he got evil... we did the whoops backwards then climbed the entire ambulance road! all the way back up! (no tunnel of love) then down marlin ridge and then all the way up gun slinger! That hurt! back around to teh start finish I was moving well but feeling like junk! 45mins on the first lap.... hit the 2nd lap and I started to dog it... got passed by a couple guys and was feeling ill....

I recovered and said to myslef just turn it down and have fun your not even gonna come close today.... So I did I settled into a more fun pace and enjoyed the sunshine. Up the ambulence road then I rocked the desecnt up gun slinger and down and then I saw that group that passed me early on fading.... nice! there was a quick up hill that I hammered and at the top they were with in 100yrds... I new I could catch them on the hairy desecnt to come and exiting that last turn I was right on thier wheel!

Only the fire road to go, I get right in my big ring and get on the 3rd guys wheel.... The guy at the front turns up the gas we are moving and I'm thinking ah no way they have more kick then me :(

But we hit a small sand pit and I bust out of the draft and roost thru the sand!!!! yup HR hit hi of the day there 194!!! I hit the pavement look back the guys are not with in reach! I cross the finish wait for them to catch and say nice race...

Rults come up yup they were both in my cat :) piped by the fat guy :) 7th on the day.... could have been better but could have been worse :)

Whistler...

Really looking forward to Whistler, need to work on my DH/DJ'ing a bit but I think I'll have fun....

A line here I come!

Mission Trails finally

After 2 days off it was time to get back at it!

I met up with a new teamate for a total ass kicking! Out the grasslands and up the single track we went my HR didn't drop be low 180.... He kept the pace high I tried to hang but it didn't happen. Damn I'm slow :( Up the sycamore connector he tossed it down! and I was lagging still hadn't seen less then 180 and we were 30 mins into the ride now.... That climb hurt alot more then usual due to the effort leading up to it!

Down the connector I used to try and recover and we hit the fireroad and I got into my big ring but couldn't hang... it was sad...

It was time to head up the switch backs and I knew he was gonna kill me, I backed off a bit knowing I had a race in less then 48hrs. And finally saw a few mins below 180 :) up the switch backs I settled into my own pace and made the turn up top he was a good 1/2 a mile again of me.... Man I needed this ass kicking! We get to the desecent and realized that my slowness will have to cut the ride short :(

We desecnt into sycamore cyn finally I get my HR down a bit and recover. We crank back by the lakes, I'm soooooo slow! dropped again, but its good as I need to get pushed. He needs to get home so we agree he should hit the gas. I cruise back feeling like alill bit stupid but knowing that if I can ride with fast people (if they don't hate me for being slow) I will get better.

Lesson of the day, ride with fast people more often the will teach you how slow you really are :)

Pints?

And on the 6th day he rested... well so I though... We hit up the road bikes for a ride up to Pizza port (which is now a tradition on monday evenings)

Started out easy but Matt and Joe had legs (I did not) and I wanted to chill but they were going just a lill faster then I had hoped... up the climb to delmar and then past dog beach. We added a couple miles by heading up all the way to Swami's and turned around and to pizza port. Where I didn't part take in beer as my head was still a lill foggy so I drank too much poweraid and ate too much beer buddies...

Stomach way too full we headed back and Joe and Matt again were going alill fast for my take and my full stomach! I was lagging behind and hurtin with the amount of food in me.... (note to self way less food next time!) Fun ride though!

ATT

Fog in my head or no fog it was time to get a move on! I thought we wouldn't be riding as the forecast looked grim but after a lill while it looked nice so we hit it!

Heading up I was really not feeling it, the dizzyness seemed worse at slow speeds... we weren't going that slow as we hit the top of the first section in 30mins! not bad... back at it Matt was way up in front and I could just keep Joe in sight. We got to the top of eco challenge in ~1hr not bad really.

Down we went and I love this section! sessioned a drop a couple times and hit most of the good stuff I was feeling fine on the down!

Back up eco challegne again this time was feeling more warmed up and Joe was fading so we were about even :)

Down again I nailed all the good stuff :) We headed out after that and down to the lower berm section so much fun! we were rippin!
We hit the truck trail again and joe opened it up. I was on his heals and we were moving! Floating thru rock gardens ripping the wall rides so much fun. Hit the Road gap no issue! Stopped to let Matt catch up and I took teh front and that was it! I was GONE! hitting every jump, wall ride, and hip on the way down:) I was feeling good!

I dig this trail def my fav right now!

Mission Trails finally

Well Joe was due to leave SD in a few days so we met up with Jeff and Charles for a fun finally in mission trails.

We headed out the visitor center and across the grass lands my head was foggy but ok... We hit up a new climb and it was putting a hurt on me for sure! We criused thru a canyon then took a left and up we went up a few switch backs then up 2 really steep fire road sections... I almost cleared the 2nd one but my foggyness was tossing me for a loop and couldn't stay on my line.

Down barrels we went man this is fun! I was felt smooth dispite the fog in my head growing... We hit the single track home and I was moving well, back to the car and I went south... Stomach was a mess head spinning.... damn inner ear....

mission trails recovery ride

Nice easy mission trails recover ride :)

Started out the normal route but everyone wanted a shorter ride so I did a medium ride and cut out bedford hill and met everyone at the ledge, down e-ticket and I cleared S-turns. I skipped xtra credit as hell its my recovery day :)

Nice spin.... speaking of spins my head was so so.... hoping to get better and better as the days go on :)

Santa Ynez Race

So wake up and try and shake off the nyquil fog, and pop too much advil....my head was spinning from my inner ear issue....

There was a nice lill loop section at the start where the feed zone was and had a small hill in it so warm up was great there. 9:15 I start the warm up, easy 130-140bpm first lap, 150+ on 2nd lap, I hammer the crap out of the 3rd lap 170's, and back to 140's for my 4th lap 25min warm up adn ready to stage.

I cool off a lill waiting for the start. top 10 in the series get call ups. I start 3rd row.

Gun goes off I get into my pedal and we are off, into the first turn and I get squeezed.... I could have tossed an elbow but I tapped the brakes and fell in line. up the first lill hill I look back and we are all together wheel to wheel the whole group I'm sitting about 9-10th wheel. Down the hill and off onto the course. We all stay together till the base of the first switch back climb and I'm redlined!!! I'm try not to panick but there is no way I'm gonna be able to hold this pace no way! I get passed by 2 guys right before the switch backs.

We go into the climb and things start to calm down 2 guys go off the front and people start settleing in to thier pace. I pass a couple guys in the switch backs (think I'm sitting ~10th) I see one guy from our group (marked 19 on our legs 30-34 was 19...) with a flat so now I think I'm 11th.... I start to back off a bit and I see a guy from my group come up behind me. On the 2nd climb and put the screws to him!!!! never see them again... My desecnding is a bit off due to my head not on straight but the legs are feeling good and going up since its not technical all you need was legs....

up the 3rd climb and down to the start finish, I drop my arm warmers off to Kerin and don't take a bottle in the feed zone as the 1 I started with is still half full. First lap 50mins. I left the bike in Pro-pedal the whole time only changing the fork travel from 150-80mm on the climbs.

2nd lap I'm feeling he burn but am really warmed up now and open it up a bit on the main climb, I get passed here and there by a couple guys from other groups (marked 20 and 21) I pass a few guys from the 19-29 crew (marked 18) but I never see another 19 again.... I keep the hammer down though as I don't want to get caught and I wanna put in max effoert.

It was fun to see teamates out there even though I didn't know them got a few cheers from the crowd (Go SHO-AIR!) I finished strong and after the final turn I looked back saw no one zipped up my jersey and rolled no handed over the line (no arms up like a I won or anything just happy with my effort)

Ended up I was 12th out fo 25 guys so mid pack was my goal and I got it :) 1:38 Great race!

Santa Ynez pre-ride

Woke up early saturday am and met up with 1 of my new teamates to pre-ride the course. Was really cool as he had raced there before so he knew the course well.

Up the first climb it was steep and I was trying to take it easy the day before the race, fun tight switch backs and had 1 really steep turn!

up a lill more and we passed the DHers at the starting house, man I used to be one of those guys making fun of me and spandex :)

Across the top and down a fun off camber desecent, lots of off chamber. Hit the 2nd climb not a bad one fire road that turned to single track steep at times but not bad at the top of this one we ran into a few locals (cows....) we continued up and at the next corner there were cows but these ones had horns.... sketchy.... around the next corner I look up the hill to my right and there is a HUGE cow freeked out running along side of us.... that thing was freaked! and I was a lill too :)

down a lill and up the last climb this was wasn't bad at all middle ring and keep it moving. Down a couple long switch backs and ripped the fire road back :)

I played alill around the start thinking of what gear I wanted to start in and what the enterance to the single track was like.

Good ride was glad to have a giude!

Mission Trails Punishment....again....

Well trying to get into the this bio-rythme (uber hard days on sunday to simulate race efforts) I moved my MTB ride to monday thinking it would be cooler then sunday.... Wrong it was 107 at my work at noon... great... I hit the train @ 5:15 it was ~95 deg... My camel back had leaked all over my bag soaking all my clothes which worked out nice :) I was relatively cool to start.

I hit the dirt HARD skipping extra credit early in order to try and warm up proper in this heat. down the stairs and up to the Mesa I wasn't feeling all that fast the heat was zapping me.... Across the mesa I put in good effort and down tothe 52 I was rockin the down.

Hit the 4 steps on the way to the ledge the conditions were tough, Hot, dry, dusty traction was low.... no dabs no pauses up the steps to teh ledge and down the ledge over the rollers and down to E-ticket lost my concentration for a sec and BAM I'm on the ground... Loose corner low side... Its ok I didn't need the skin on my elbow/calf.... Down E-ticket and thru the cyn I'm not feeling it (after the crash) I try to put in a good effort up S-turns but I don't have the energy to surge up the water bar, and then my seat desides to drop on its own a lill further up... I keep it going and head up the fire road for lap 2, stop as I realize my seat post is slipping....then keep moving. The sun is setting and falling behind the hills now and the heat is dropping, now I'm coming around! across the mesa I feel good, down E-ticket much better I rock the canyon (stop again as my front screwer opens) and head up S-turns... No issues this time! I rock it! Up to Xtra credit no hesitation and up I go! 1st time up hurt alot, I fly down the desecnt, and head back to go at it again! 2nd time is better (its getting cooler out but my damn seat keeps dropping) I go for a 3rd round up! I nail it and feel good trying to keep my HR above 160 on the decents. I head back to the car. 1 crash, 3 stops for mechanicals and I still fly :) Hoping for good stuff this weekend!

SD Bay Ride

Great ride! I really dig this ride!

We set out from Mission bay so I rode straight out from my house (I love riding from my house cause when your done your home:)

We headed off to get downtown the cross wind was pretty bad (I have no idea what is up with the wind of late...) thru downtowan with a stop to grab our ferry tix and we were off past petco and into national city... my rear wheel took a beating on the crap roads in NC... that needs some trueing now :( But the pace was light and we were chatting it up :)

Finally into chula vista and past the audi/vw's shipping port lots of Q7's out there must not be selling well.... past the new marina down there @ the junction of the 94 we were just talkin and chilling a light pace. On the bike path for a bit that was nice, then once on the road again matt decided to open it up a lill, he came past me ~30mph (me ~20ish) I jump on his wheel and hang he sits up and looks back and was very surprised to see me I think that was the hardest I worked all day :)

couple turns here and there and we were onto the new bike path that connects 13st/the strand to Chula Vista.... wow that was nice! fresh pavement! clean, fenced off, lots of wild flowers out! makes the ride soooo nice with out having to ride on palm ave in IB...

on to the strand we went Matt led us out and I came up and was like lets pick a easy pace and do 30s pulls keep it light and easy. he sets the pace @ about 19-20mph and we take great turns just rotating around (Don taking great pulls) and we slayed the strand in no time and I don't think I even broke 165 bpm... good stuff!

we cranked around a bit and caught the 12:30 ferry accross the Bay (lill pano pic from the boat)

Back to downtown we ride up the PCH to mission bay again and do a lap around fiesta island for fun! Matt heads to the car and I take it easy cruising up to my house (greated I was starting to feel crampy heading up as I forgot to eat breakfast and was now @ almost 3hrs with no food...)

Great ride looking forward to doing to more and more on my light days (NO HILLS!)
