So after a pretty easy ride in I decided that with all the crap I need to do tomorrow that I wasn't going to ride just lift.

So I left work and pushed big gears up the initial 3 climbs. I was working hard but I wasn't doing that great on time. Then I swear I hit every light on the route!!!!

I pushed my big ring all thru miramar and up to the 52. But my time at that point was still sub par but it wasn't because I wasn't putting in an effort. I was cranking on clairemont mesa but again I hit multiple lights... start...stop start...stop ugh...

The legs felt good the lungs too but the lower back was def a lill tight. I think that riding with a full bag really slows my down :( off till Wednesday

Ride to work today. I started off really easy then picked it up a bit about half way thru I had a rabbit....

turned out to be a teenager on a mtb with a flat.... i had to tools to fix (presta only c02 and a road tube felt bad) so I kept on and now I was coming up to the usual carroll cyn hill

I powered up it and past the highschool so I thought at that point I was prob moving pretty fast but in the end I was a few mins off my fastest pace (but that is good as I need to slow a bit today as after the efforts of saturday and sunday)

I need to pace myself as I'm riding the next 4 days.... and I'm lifting today and wednesday. keep on keeping on....

Another good trainer ride. Hit up PQC on my own and hit it I did. had a couple rabbits to catch and caught everyone I saw in the distance. :)

Up powerlines to tunnels did a loop up top then down rocking horse and up then another loop up top. I then went down cobles and past the water fall.

I was waivering on going up cobles.... But I sucked it up and hammered up the climb! almost bobbled but stuck it and I got up it with authority. Down lopez and back the to car. Good stuff

Well today was a great ride! I didn't feel as fast as I want to but there is time to still pick up a bit of speed. We set out at ~8am and the weather was perfect. As we climbed out of spring canyon I hit my max on the day 191....

I was feeling ok, we dropped down into Santee we kept a good pace thru the canyon and to the ranger station. We met up with a new guy Kent @ the ranger station and him and Jim beat up on us up the fire road climb I paused for a sec at the lot and headed to the top.

I felt pretty strong its nice to have people push you I was in bigger gears than a year ago for sure! we descended into martha's and I was feeling great descending.

We then took a detour up CARDIAC hill. This was a pretty serious but not that steep climb... But what was the killer was we then ridge ran and the steep ups and downs were taking thier toll.

We had a fun decent back into Sycamore Cyn and then thru the cyn back to the power power lines. I was feeling tired but fast thru the single track back to mast blvd.

back to mission trails and to the car great long ride today! The legs were at an 8 athe lungs were a bit water logged @ ~a 6

After a few short rides at hard pace it was time for a little more time on the bike. Me and Jeff hit up mission trails for a post work ride. The legs were a bit tired but I felt ok.

I didn't clear all the switch backs I wanted to on the climb but I did ok. My bike handling was good and I was moving pretty well on the descents, next a long ride Saturday

Holy shit! I didn't feel like I was ripping... but the watch don't lie.... I fucking smashed my

PR 16:58 (173 avg up) and a new PR down 10:05 (157)

Old PRs up 17:41 (176) down 10:12(159).

It was hot as balls today also. guess I really am good in the heat.
So I was fast up and fast down!

Wow as my goal after riding and lifting yesterday was around 18mins..... My front disk was dragging pretty bad also.... No bobbles today picked good lines and was all business. hmmmm I'm gonna need a bigger hill :)

The Back was a little sore today though, that is something I'm gonna have to work on as my legs felt great my lungs were good but when I was mashing big gears up the climb I could feel my lower back straining.... I need to strengthen that! esp for the endurance side I mean yea I can live thru the pain for 1 or 2 laps but its the 3rd or 4th lap when I can't put any power down that would suck. So I need to find lower back strengthening exercises with out hurting my back.... tricky....

Rest now well 24hrs rest riding after work tomorrow.

First Ride back in the training cycle for Moab. My goal up the climb was 20:30, as that is where I was this time out from Vail lake. Yea I was up in 17:43.... (though this time my avg HR up was 178 vs 176 on the 17:41 so I did work a little harder) 2 sec off my PR.... So I was feeling ok, I did go out on a mission and was motivated so I pushed.

I caught a bit of a stitch half way up and pushed thru it. The conditions were pretty loose but I cleared EVERYTHING! I def bobble a couple times and thought I might dab but pulled it out. which is actually pretty good for me! Legs were a 8 out of 10 and the lungs were a 6 out of 10. I bet I could have pushed a bit harder I had a little left when I got to the top but this result is def inspiring! Good to know I'm not too too far off from where I was in the spring.

I def need to hit the GYM hard though... I def know I lost some strength as my lower back was straining a bit and the arms are a little weak. So after work I'm going to put in a short but intense core/arms work out. Good stuff!!!!

But that was the point this was a fun ride no efforts no flying up climbs it was drink beers and have fun :) Def a great event and a fun time can't wait for next year. But for now its all business for the ext 7 weeks till moab.

Easy ride as I continue to try and rest up a bit before the Next 7 intense weeks before Moab. Next week starts the Hell, Gym 2-3 times a week, MTB 3-4 times a week and the road bike is only gonna see use when I ride into work once a week or so.... But today was fun as Big Tony got a MTB and Tara joined me and matt for a ride at PQC.

We did very little climbing which kept it fun! we did take them down rocking horse! They were troopers and did awsome! Great to see newb's out there :)

Rest friday and all weekend (aside from a fun ride at midnight madness) Then its all business!

Prob should have taken the day off but really felt jazzed to ride into work today. Tried to keep telling myself to dial it back take it easy and enjoy the ride not to hammer and I think I did was a couple mins slower then usual. The legs and lungs were a bit tired but I'm sure that is more from the lack of sleep I got (7hrs after being up for 19hrs) and I forgot a water bottle....

Got in an unexpected Ride with Jp while on vacation in CO. Had shoes that were too big and dana's bike which was too small but I was super happy to ride!

We headed out south west and were riding in and out of a HUGE triathlon going on. After cheering on a few guys and gals we headed north and up the Olde Stage climb (I think that is the name?) and I was def feeling the altitude! after feeling truely horrible toward the top we peaked out at ~6,300 feet and mashed a great decent and hopped on the John Paul Robb locomotive for the express run to his house!

Man grabbing a wheel out there is insane! the slight grade down for the last few miles and the winds make it a HUGE advantage to have a wheel and we cooked home thanks to him! Great ride legs were feeling ok esp after 4 days of hiking @ 9,000'+ but the lungs hated me at that altitude.

The natural travertine deposits make the lake bottom a sick blue color so cool!

Well the rain of the night led to Uber Clear skies! and we woke up to the sickest views I think I've ever seen!

The clouds were socking in the valley below and the sun was poking out in spots it was amazing!

Unfortunately the PB&J I was so looking forward to for breakfast was a no go as a mouse got into our the bread in the night :(

So I ate as much oatmeal as I could and off we were down the MNT thru sick Aspen forests. Saw a couple sick Jeeps and I was jealous as I was walkin down.

But down we went and to Camp hale and back to civilization.

Pics from the whole trip!

So with very little sleep we started to pack up and I ate as much oatmeal as I could stomach and off we were to Jackel.

We hit the path and I was feeling tired but way better than the finish of day 1. We were headed to Searle Pass @ 12,050 feet! On the way we hit a couple small snow fields fun to play in snow in August.... in shorts :)

We got over Searle Pass and hit the biggest snow field of the day. We descended down a bit thru the valley and cross a bunch of fun rivers.

We started up to Kokomo Pass @ 12,300' that was a tough ascent but as we got down into the pass the skies opened up and it started to rain . It rained for a bit not a bad turn just a quick shower. We descended into the the valley that would take us up to Jackel.

We found the spot to start our bush wacking, thanks to Joe's keen navigation skills. Up up and a way we went! up 700 feet in about a 1/4 mile..... OUCH! I felt great compared to the day before.

We got up into the Hut and less then 45mins later the skies opened again and POURED! man it was nice to be in this hut.

Dinner was great! mmmm temphe in a peanut sauce! and a great black stone Mavacia.... Yea real camp food :) Much more sleep the 2nd night too!

So after flying into Denver and packing the bags we drove to Copper Mnt.

Setting out to the West, South West up Copper mnt and up canyon following a river up thru some beautiful scenery.

Kerin "Diesel" Dooley set the pace and the girls were setting the tempo, while the guys (aka the pack Mules) we hurts a bit (well I was :) ) As we got up above 10,000' the alt really started to go to my head. And the girls were slowing a bit also. My GI track was a rumbling and my head was bangin! (hell I was even seeing a few stars).

but just in time we crested the ridge and Janet's Hut was right there! Man was that a welcome sight as I was hurting!

After dropping the bags and getting into some clean cloths I ate as much as I could and drank a bit of wine (the more we ate and drank the less I had to carry on day 2)

The altitude came into play again that night when after taking 3 Excedrin the head ache went away but I was not able to sleep much.... Another side effect of hi altitude.

Hut hut hike

Well back in civilization! All the pics, stats, and gps data to
come. But here is a pic from the deck on jackel hut last night.

Sunday, August 3, 2008

So this is my last ride for a about 10 days so I wanted to make it a good one. Jeff's neighbor Jim was gonna show us how to get from Mission Trails to Sycamore Canyon.... looping 2 great rides together and making a pretty epic ride! We set off under cloudy cool skys and made our way thru mission trails into Miramar (shhhhhh)

We crossed a locked gate and jim says "we better move fast as if the gate is locked that means they are shooting" this sounds like a great idea :) But after rocking down a pretty sweet single track we were coming down a fireroad to the powerlines section by santee lakes. Cool! we did a new single track up the west side of the canyon.

We got to the fence and it was Jim killing us! up to the parking lot and up the rest of the climb and it was Jeff and My time to shine we rocked the decent into martha's grove. back thru the upper single track and to the gate. now the fun part the rippin single track thru the canyon.

I was feeling good, a bit tired but good. Then to end it we went UP the switch backs to the west that we usually come down..... I only cleared like half of then but the switch back decent down to the powerlines was awesome! back to mast blvd and ride that to the mission trail equestrian center.

I was feeling good esp for 3+ hrs of riding but I took a swig of water from the fountain there and both me and Jim didn't feel good after (note to self don't drink that water!!!) but back to the car and the end of a pretty epic ride!

This was easily the longest distance mtb ride I've ever done and one of the funnest.
